Angler’s Guide: NJ Licensing & Permits
Preparing for a visit to the beautiful coastal waters served by Hog Moon Fishing is the first step toward a memorable time on the water. Whether you are aiming for a day on the bay or exploring New Jersey’s inland beauty, knowing the local regulations ensures your trip remains focused on the catch.
Saltwater Fishing Requirements
For our saltwater charters, New Jersey does not require a traditional fishing license. However, all recreational saltwater anglers aged 16 and older must register annually with the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry Program (NJSRRP). This registration is free, mandatory, and helps support the sustainability of our coastal ecosystems. We recommend completing this registry online through the official New Jersey Fish & Wildlife website before your departure.
Freshwater Fishing Licenses
If your travels take you to New Jersey’s freshwater lakes, rivers, or streams, the rules differ. Anyone aged 16 and older must possess a valid New Jersey freshwater fishing license. This rule applies to both residents and non-residents, and the license must be visibly displayed on your outer clothing while you are fishing.
For residents aged 16 to 64, an annual fishing license is $22.50. A discounted license is available for resident seniors aged 65 to 69 for $12.50. For our visiting anglers, an annual non-resident license is $34.00. If you are only planning a short visit, New Jersey offers convenient non-resident options, including a 2-day license for $9.00 or a 7-day vacation license for $19.50. Please note that if you plan to fish for trout or salmon in freshwater, you must also purchase a Trout Stamp, which is required regardless of whether you keep your catch.
Exemptions and Special Provisions
New Jersey offers several exemptions to encourage accessibility. Resident anglers aged 70 and older are not required to purchase a fishing license or a Trout Stamp; simply carry a driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID as proof of age. Additionally, active-duty military personnel—regardless of their residency status—are eligible to purchase a resident-rate fishing license. If you are a resident with total blindness, you may also qualify for a free license by contacting the state licensing office.
Where to Obtain Your License
The most efficient way to prepare is by visiting the official New Jersey Fish & Wildlife license sales website. You can purchase your freshwater licenses or complete your free saltwater registration online, ensuring you have all your documentation ready before you arrive. Alternatively, you can purchase physical licenses at authorized agents, such as local sporting goods and bait-and-tackle shops across the state. We suggest confirming your status in advance so you can spend your time enjoying the water with Hog Moon Fishing rather than managing paperwork.
